The LWCad 4 contest has been extended to the end of this month and I thought I might try to model a medieval rose window. It doesn't have to be full buildings...just architectural in nature. Enter if you can...it's a must have plugin for Lightwave!

This is the small outer window, still need to add little bits and pieces. I recorded the process and the video should be up tomorrow :)

The first render has no SSS, Fast Skin node was used in the slimy7 render...which was replaced with the Sigma2 node...for the bottom image. Next....I need to work out how to add transparency and still use the Sigma2 node....Mmmmmmm.

Giants of Nemrut

Here's the first pic of the giant statures on Mount Nemrut, touched up in Photoshop..of course :)

Actually, they weren't that big at all, the largest head is almost 2 meters high..I always thought they were much taller...it's an awesome thing to see in person! There's two sets of identical statures on either side of the pyramid, one set, welcomes the new day & the other set sees off the setting sun.

The pyramid is made up of tons of loose small rocks, piled on top of each other, a perfect defense against looters & tomb raiders.

Based on the raygun from "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"...a touch over the hour mark to model, but the handle threw me off somewhat...a lot actually!

Just a preview of my bus tour of Turkey..9 days and 9 nights. Some sunrise shots from the top of Mount Nemrut, that's the place with the ancient giant head sculptures...but more on those later :)

It took 2.5 hours just to get to the top and the roads were one long construction site...but well worth it!

I hollowed out the center of the rocket as best I could without using the Thickener Lscript, which doesn't work too well with low ploy models. I think I'll try Thickener after I subdivide the model a few times...just to compare results :)

The red costume and skin surfaces (sofab189 & sofab191) worked well on the sofa, the blue was a bit too light for my liking. The rest were...well, the result of further experiments...haha

I did this character some years ago, the lack of references didn't help any. By the time I liked how he turned out, it was time to send an email to the company. Unfortunately, before I could even do that..they came out with their own version. Talk about timing, the worst thing, the kangaroo has lost a lot of his character and personality. To me, it just looks like a giant green rat that just came out of weight watchers.

Also, the funniness in the ads died as well. Why is that, when a 2d character becomes 3d, all past history is wiped away. For some reason...it has to act and move like a human, when it never did before...where is the fun in that :)

So I decided to combine one leather node tree with a metal one, the first image is the result without any editing. With the following images you can see how it slowly changes. As a result of these two surfaces, I have managed to get over 30 surfaces and boy, some are very cool...most were unexpected!

I'm calling the metal extension pack complete...I might release it on Friday or there abouts.

I think those first five surfaces will look good on my sofa model....Mmmmmm :)

I did this for the Adobe EXTREME Print Challenge on Facebook. The full image at 7200 x 3600 pixels, took 50 hours to render on my Macbook. At which point, I found out the subdivision level for the stars were left at the default level of 3...don't you just love when that happens :)

So I ended up doing the stars in Photoshop, kinda looks better with the mix of 2d and 3d...I might have to try that more often. It looks like I didn't make the deadline...but it was fun trying to depict spring in space.

The top of the head was subdivided once and the resulting n-gons fixed, then flattened before creating the hair.

Believe it or not, these surfaces are also using the Worn Edge example by Simon. I just experimented a lot....connecting that output into this input and came up with these. There's even a hint of burnt metal in number 21 & 22....coolness :)

Worn Edges-Yes We Can

As soon as I posted the feature request on Newtek's forum for a worn edges node or update...things have turnout great.

It seems you can indeed create the worn edges look within LW. Simon, came up with a cool solution and posted his example and people are running with it...Check it out and join in the fun :)

These are my first attempts at integrating his node tree into my metal surfaces...basic stuff, but very promising!

Worn Edges with LW nodes feature request

Modo has a cool Worn Edges material...looks great.

I tired to create something similar in Lightwave, but I couldn't get it to work. The last test render is using grit node, but the red surface is on the inside edges...instead of the outer edges. I'm sure it can be done with weight maps, but who wants to spend the time creating them...not me :)

So I came up with an idea that might do the trick. Take the Material Mixer to combine foreground and background materials, and add an extra input for edges and one for scale/size. The idea is, you connect an Angle node to Edge input and specify which edges should be affected. For example, if the Angle input value is 90.0°..then any edge that has an angle between 0.0° & 90.0°, will have the background material applied. The Scale input can be a percentage or a distance value, say 6mm either side of the edge etc.

And bingo...we have worn edges in Lightwave....I think...hehe.

Oh yes....I got another 3 cool metal textures as a result of this :)

More Material Mixer node experiments....but boy, the render times take a hit.

The red one took three hours to render and the rest almost two. I'll have to see if I can trim the node trees and reduce the time, while still getting similar effects.

The good thing about the Material Mixer node, is you practically get two textures for the price of one. The first two images above, are the same two node trees, with their connections to the Material Mixer node reversed, so you can specify which node tree is the background layer and which one is the foreground layer....very cool stuff :)

It's all done, I included the 3 Lightwave object/scenes as seen in the renders, instead of supplying just the surfaces...just to make it easier :)

The first image is an example from the experimental surfaces as seen in this blog post , there are 27 surfaces for you to explore. Many are great, but some might have render issues...which I never did figure out...so beware..haha.

One more day to go before I start emailing the node pack....I hope people like it :)

But I couldn't resist....I had to experiment some more and this is the first result of many. I'm liking the layered effect, it has a metallic coating peeling off...exposing the base material kinda look...very sexy! I can't wait to try it with the leather/fabric surfaces...metallic thread/pattern weaved within the fabric......Ooooooooh.

How did I do it??
Well...I copied one of the metal node trees and pasted it into the gecko node editor, added a Material Mixer node and played around. Simple stuff...try it yourself with the PPG metal and the gecko scene.

So, I'm thinking I'll keep on experimenting and create an extension pack, with a minimum of say 20 surfaces, but probably way more than that. The price would be between $10 to $20, but that would depend on the amount of surfaces.

Here's the good bit, I'm thinking of giving it away to those who buy the first pack, before the special offer ends. Mmmmmmm....sounds like a good idea to me :)

I'll post more examples in the coming days and weeks...stay tuned.

Finally finished the metal node library, all I need to do is create the html and it should be ready...hopefully in a few days.

The rocket images are how the bottom three rows of surfaces look like on an object. They are two separate metal surfaces combined together with the Material Mixer node...first time I have used it......wonderful node with lots of possibilities :)

I've been asked to supply the hdr maps used in my free scenes, so here is the Kitchen01.hdr map. If there are references to kuz03.hdr, kuz11.hdr and kuz23.hdr in any Lightwave scene, they are simply smaller versions of 03.hdr, 11.hdr and 23.hdr from the first HDR pack above.

Fellow deviant artist zbyg....has made some excellent hdr maps that everyone should have :)

Here's a preview of my metal surface library, I have another batch to render and then it'll be available soon. Some of them are the same surfaces, because I named it after the object they were used in, so it should be easier to choose...more to come!

What do you do when you want to connect a semicircle to a square?

You copy the semicircle into a new layer and convert it into a square/rectangle, then Bridge the two together :)

If you manually create a square and add points so it matches the number in your semicircle, it still might not work. I think the point order of both objects need to be the same to get the best result...in any case, it's always fun to try a different way of doing things.
